📊 Augmenting Visualization Stimuli

Experiments for testing effective visualization designs rely on "good" stimuli, but it is difficult to have a set of stimuli that sufficiently covers intended design spaces and manage lots of stimuli as researchers iterate their study designs. To support stimuli-related tasks for visualization experiments, we are interested in augmenting stimuli designs given an initial idea and helping researchers manage them iteratively with AI systems.

⚛️ Quantum Programming Support and Visualization

Many find it challenging to interact with quantum computers because of the lack of an intuitive relationship between quantum information and domain knowledge. To make quantum computing more seamless, usable interfaces are warranted for both encoding and interpretation of quantum programs.

🔊 Accessible Data Interaction via Sonification

Systems for complex data heavily rely on visual representations, yet they are limited in supporting Blind users. Sonification is a promising method to make data interaction accessible. We are interested in developing sonification-based data representation methods in communicating insights beyond simple tasks.

Undergraduate internship

Master's position

Domestic students must be admitted to the School of Computing Master's program to join our lab. So, please contact us as you apply. International students are advised to reach out to us before application. Note that KAIST (and other universities in Korea) generally assumes "research master's" which requires a thesis for graduation. If you have completed a Bachelor's degree in a computing-related area, you will have to take a coding test. Although non-CS major applicants are encouraged to apply and not required to take a coding test, I prefer to work with students with strong programming skills. Having some prior publications is good, but it is not necessary at all. The followings are requred when you contact us.

Ph.D. position

You must contact us before applying. If you don't do so, your application will not be considered. We will then schedule a short meeting (remote or in-person). At KAIST (and other universities in Korea), a Master's degree is required when applying for a Ph.D. KAIST has a Master's-Ph.D. integrated program, but it is highly selective.

I do not have a concrete plan at the moment yet, but please feel free to contact us. We will first have in-person/remote discussion.

International applicants

Our lab welcomes international students. The lab uses English as a primary language. KAIST provides most of the courses in English and has a Korean language education program as well. For degree-seeking students, KAIST's ISSS will support you. For visiting students, internship, and postdocs, I am happy to support your immigration processes, so please contact me well in advance as it may take a longer time than expected.

Some notes

All documents (except transcripts issued by a Korean university) must be in English. Please take a close look at the admission policies and timelines from the official admission website. In general, KAIST recruits graduate students pretty early on (Winter/Summer for those starting Fall/Spring, respectively).
